Inspector Imanishi Investigates Soho Crime Seicho Matsumoto Beth Cary Books

Inspector Imanishi Investigates follows the eponymous detective as he attempts to solve a seemingly simple mystery: a man is found dead on the train rails, his face savagely attacked. However, the leads quickly grow cold, and Imanishi - and the readers - rely on small strokes of luck (and encounter many dead ends) as the case slowly unfurls.

I loved this book for many reasons. The first is the story itself: it has a slow pace, but not a dull or plodding one; almost everything happens for a reason, and all the loose ends are tied up in mostly satisfying ways by the end of the book. In addition, Matsumoto writes about postwar Japan in an intriguing way, and I gobbled up the morsels of Japanese culture he sprinkled along the way. Third, the pacing is excellent, in particular because it illustrates just how gruelling solving a crime can be. I also appreciated the lack of high-speed car chases and big kabooms: Matsumoto doesn't need it to make the plot riveting.

Overall, I highly recommend this book to people who like mystery books and for those who want to branch out to international books. I do not recommend it for people who need action at every step.

Inspector Imanishi Investigates Soho Crime Seicho Matsumoto Beth Cary Books Reviews

This is the book that served as the basis for the Japanese hit movie "Castle of Sand". The book is excellent, and well translated, and tells a story that the entire world should be made familiar with.
Terrific writer
This is a worthwhile read, with an unusual protagonist (for crime fiction)· Inspector Imanishi is likeable, well-adjusted, and conscientious. He has friends, gets along with his wife and sister, and isn't an alcoholic or an addict. Nor does he fight with his boss. Despite these defects, I thoroughly enjoyed following his efforts to solve an unusual case.
Japanese detective work at its best. Full of twists and the dedicated work of one detective. Great read that keeps the reader's interest piqued.
I liked this book on two levels It was a first class detective novel, featuring the patient, methodical Inspector Imanishi, and it was a window into Tokyo 50 years ago. If you like mysteries and Japan, this book is for you.
I generally read multiple books simultaneously. I enjoyed reading this book, but found it challenging to keep the story line in my head between reads. Stumbling onto the Japanese film based on the book made it more so.
There were a scattering of odd characters in the ebook, as though there were some incompatible fonts used in production, or, for example, a handwritten "K" became "IC" in the ebook. You would think the publisher would catch these things before selling a final product. Otherwise, I liked the story.
